We Were Soldiers
January 27, 2008Ever since my military service in the mid 1980s I have long held a fascination with the Vietnam war. I have read dozens of books about it and yes, unfortunately seen most of the Hollywood liberalizations. Here is an article that should be an eye open to those who still feel we were ‘mistaken’ both then, and now.
Who Owns the Vietnam War? by Arthur Herman
This was a fascinating read. Sure, I was aware of inherent bias in the media… but… this is laid out very logically.
As we spent all of four hours (literally) on the Vietnam War in American History in high school (on a Saturday morning when we were cramming in the final twenty years before the AP exam), and as I never took history in college, I can say that I honestly wish I had had access to this kind of information when I was teaching. It would have made putting the literature of the time period (and beyond) in context a lot more interesting… and perhaps, accurate.
Thanks for posting and drawing attention to it. It’s never cut and dry… no one is ever decidely right or wrong, and the casualties stack up on both sides. I’m still not convinced we need to stick around in Iraq though 🙂
